Beyond Sentences:

How to be a Language-rich Parent for your 3- to 7-year-old (developmental age)

In this 5-hour online class, learn about 9 core oral language skills your child needs to know in the preschool and pre-primary ages.

There is so much speech and language development information targeted at the young ones. But how about our preschoolers and kindergarteners? How can parents continue to support their oral language development now that they are speaking in running sentences?

With 12+ years as a pediatric speech-language-feeding therapist, I now have a very clear roadmap on what children with language delays need to learn so that they have a SOLID oral language foundation in preparation for primary school years and beyond. Now that my daughter is 4 years old, I find myself giving her "language therapy" every day! And this is when I realised, what I know about language development is NOT just for children with language delays. Parents with typically-developing children will benefit from knowing what to focus on in these pre-primary years. Our role is no longer to just build their vocabulary, we have SO MUCH more to do!

And as for parents of children with language delays, more often than not, your child will require more direct (visual) teaching of the higher order language skills. This is my area of expertise, my bread and butter! In this webinar, I will show you how to break down each language skill and teach them using visual supports. By the end of this webinar, I hope that I have trained you to be a skilled therapist assistant :)

The following are covered in 10 modules,

a total of 5 hours of video content.

FAQ

1) My child is 10 years old but he has language delay. He speaks like a 4-year-old. Is this course still suitable for me to guide him?

Answer: Yes! This course will be suitable for you. Parents will benefit from this course if your child is not able to:

  • share personal events coherently

  • tell a story with clear beginning, middle, and end

  • play language games such as "Guess what animal is this?" or "Tell me 10 _____"

2) How is this compared to the courses for parents of children age 0-3yo?

Answer:  From zero to three, the child's main language development is on learning the proper articulation of the words, building vocabulary and increasing sentence length. This is the stage of "learning language". From age 3 onwards, there are several core skills for a child to learn. Without mastering these skills, the child might have difficulties in learning in a classroom setting. This is the stage of "using language to learn" and this stage lasts for the rest of the child's life.

This 5 hour course address the immediate key skills I see needed for children after they are able to speak in simple sentences.

3) Can this replace 1:1 speech language therapy?

Answer:

For families who need to manage their resources carefully, this course can be an invaluable tool. Traditional speech therapy for all these core skills could cost thousands of dollars, but with this course, you can learn how to teach your child the necessary skills at home. If financial constraints make weekly/bi-weekly therapy difficult, my hope is that this course will be comprehensive enough to empower you to support your child's development independently, at your own pace.

If your child’s language challenges are more apparent, this course can potentially help replace traditional speech therapy. Designed to be parent-friendly, each module provides simple, actionable steps to guide you through teaching essential language skills.

Each module begins with key points to watch for in your child’s development, along with a small test you can use to check their progress. This will help you determine if they’ve mastered the skills for that specific area.

If you’re uncertain about your child’s progress or if the issues seem more complex, I recommend scheduling an in-person assessment. This allows me to gain a deeper understanding of your child’s language abilities and, based on that assessment, I can guide you on which modules to prioritize.
